If you’re having problems with your wisdom teeth, don’t ignore them. Pain in your wisdom teeth usually comes from infection, and it’s important to get that infection under control quickly and resolved.

What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are third molars. They develop and erupt between the ages of 17 and 25—a period when children become wiser as they grown into adulthood. Pain-free, healthy third molars that completely erupt don’t require any treatment. But problems with third molars are common. Nine out of ten people have at least one wisdom tooth removed.

Why Do They Cause Problems?

Most people don’t have enough room in their mouth for wisdom teeth. This causes the third molars to erupt partially or not at all. Impacted, or trapped, teeth will cause problems that affect your oral health. And you don’t have to be in your teens or 20s to be affected by impacted third molars. It is not uncommon for people in their 30s, 40s, or 50s to experience problems with them.
